All Moms are Working Moms

Dear readers,

At Incite, we believe that teams -- non-profit, for-profit and political -- are always better when they reflect the people they are built to serve. Representation matters. We believe that everyone can belong, everyone can have a seat at the tables of power.

All moms are working moms -- including the unseen, unpaid labor all moms provide behind the scenes, especially if they are unable to return to work. Historically, women and especially women with children have been overlooked or flat-out rejected, simply of who they are or who they care for. The pandemic has made this even worse.

More than 5M women have lost their jobs, because they have traded in their paying jobs to stay at home and take care of children. The number of women in the workforce is at a 33-year all time low. Additionally, Black and Latina women have unemployment rates that are up to 50% higher than the national average.

The Marshall Plan for Moms is a national movement to center mothers in our economic recovery and value their labor by advocating for public and private sector policies that support moms. This Mother’s Day, take action to support direct payment to moms, policies surrounding paid family leave, affordable childcare and pay equity, retraining programs to ensure that women can fill jobs that will exist and plans to safely reopen schools. Learn more about the Marshall Plan for Moms.

This past week, we asked the moms to share a bit about their experiences and today, we’re taking some time to highlight the incredible moms in our Incite portfolio. They’re building impactful organizations and raising children while working to create a better future everyday.

Learn about their stories and how they’re changing the world. And don’t forget to call your mom!

What is the biggest lesson you've learned after becoming a mom? Biggest lesson I’ve learned is to let go and enjoy the moment, even if it’s not what you planned. Nothing like parenthood to teach you that one! Nothing ever goes according to plan.

What about being a mom makes you the incredible leader you are? Being a parent means that you have to stop and listen to what someone is saying on a whole different level – you really do have to put yourself in a very different set of shoes – which means you listen more, and you grow the muscles that truly allow you to consider and understand others’ vantage points even if they are not your own.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned after becoming a mom?
There is so much more to life than just work.

What about being a mom makes you the incredible leader you are?
I'm able to hold space for others to show up as their full and authentic selves because being a working mom requires that I also show up as myself.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned after becoming a mom?
Sometimes the best way to be heard is by whispering. I learned some time during the 'terrible twos" that if I really want my daughter to hear me and pay attention it is much more impactful and effective to sit down with her and to speak to her softly.

What about being a mom makes you the incredible leader you are?
Becoming a parent forced me to learn patience and compassion. I like to work fast and I have high expectations for my teams. Being a parent I learned that the best way to help my child grow was not by being demanding, but by being nurturing. As a parent I ask myself, "what can I do to help my daughter find the ability to learn and grow within herself?" and I've found that asking the same question about the people I work with makes me a much more empowering and helpful leader who gets much better results from a team.
