2020 Retrospective

January 12, 2021

Dear readers,

In 2020, we were busy here at Incite.org:

 $6M deployed

26 investments

46% women led organizations

23% diverse founders

47% investments outside of SFBA

127% funds raised for San Francisco Marin Food Bank Match Campaign

We are so proud of our community of Incite entrepreneurs, who recalibrated their teams to operate during the pandemic, reckoned with the need for equity and justice, and found joy along the way.

And, now, it’s a new year. Like many of you, we are eager to begin a new chapter in America. Thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly to get us here – with a special shout out to our grantees at Vote.org, Fair Fight Action, Arena and the Center for Tech and Civic Life!

The events at the Capitol last week remind us that we have so much more work to do. We encourage you to stay engaged, to take care of yourself and to remember that civic engagement requires a long-term commitment and stamina. It's been exhausting of late, so be sure to find a moment to rest and restore.

We all have a part in making our countries and world better – whether through civic engagement or what we’re building in our companies and organizations. Let us greet this new year with renewed energy and hope.

Warmly,
Team Incite

Biden Administration Names Incite-Backed Leaders to Leadership

We are so thrilled to see the new leadership that will take over the White House in 8 days (we’re counting down) appoint leaders who will bring about effective change in their respective fields:

Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of Transportation – as mayor, he spearheaded a number of infrastructure projects. The role of transportation secretary is expected to play a central role in Biden's push for a bipartisan infrastructure package.

Jen Granholm, Secretary of Energy – a proven expert in translating climate change innovation into job creation. We got to know Jen at American Jobs Project and were so impressed by her leadership and subsequent impact. She is the smart pick to create jobs and to help save our planet.

Ali Zaidi, Deputy National Climate Advisor – a longtime friend of Incite and advisor to President-elect Biden on climate matters, he brings a cross-sector and multidisciplinary experience needed to deliver a whole-of-government response to the climate crisis.

The Machine: AMP Robotics raises $55M for AI that picks and sorts recyclable

AMP Robotics, a Denver, Colorado-based startup creating robotic systems that sort recyclable material, announced it has closed a $55 million series B funding round led by XN. The startup says it will use the funds to scale its business operations and develop AI product applications that integrate into materials recovery facilities to increase recycling rates for its customers.

AMP Robotics says that as of April, its platform had processed over a billion recyclables across installations in over 20 states, which the company claims translates to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of approximately half a million metric tons...

ForbesWomen Awards 2020: Zero Grocery-Waste Grocer

As the tower of boxes that piled up in our recycling bins during the height of quarantine illustrated, e-commerce needs a leaner and more sustainable shipping solution.

ANA Therapeutics Acquired for Late-Stage Oral Antiviral COVID-19 Development

Since its inception as a COVID-19 therapeutic company back in March, the team at ANA Therapeutics has been tirelessly working to prove out a proprietary formulation of niclosamide for coronavirus treatment.

Just this last week, ANA Therapeutics was acquired by NeuroBo Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company.

"We are delighted to join with the NeuroBo team in order to bring ANA-001 to the millions of patients infected with COVID-19. NeuroBo has the leadership and platform to support the accelerated development of this important compound as a potential treatment for this viral pandemic," said Akash Bakshi, Chief Executive Officer of ANA Therapeutics...

When we invested in ANA Therapeutics in early March, we, like many of you, were eager to help in any way we can. Now, nearly a year later, we couldn’t be more excited to be this much closer to the ANA team developing a life-saving therapeutic.
