Phenomenal Women

March 31 2021
Team Incite

March 23, 2021

Dear readers,

In this issue, we’re continuing to highlight some of the amazing women in our portfolio in honor of Women’s History Month.

One of the reasons why we started Incite is to invest in those who are often under-invested in, to make sure that the best ideas and best builders are supported. We believe that great leaders are everywhere, and come in all forms. A lot of them happen to be women. We’re thrilled to celebrate these Incite leaders this month, as they build businesses, lead governments, fight climate change and more.

We encourage you to learn about these phenomenal women -- what they’re doing and why. We find inspiration from their stories and hope you will too.

Forbes: Why The Fertility Industry Is One Of The Big Winners In The Pandemic Era

When we first met Claire Tomkins, she had a remarkable idea: make it easier for women and couples to afford to build their families using IVF and egg freezing. We were excited to be a part of her first fundraising round in 2017 and have been thrilled with the amazing wins for families everywhere.

Claire wrote this article for Forbes about the four important trends she’s observed emerging in the fertility industry, all driven by COVID-19. Check it out here!

Time100 Next: Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Judge

In June 2017, our cofounder, Swati, had just left the opening stage at the very first Arena Academy in Detroit when she was approached by a young woman named Lina Hidalgo. Lina told Swati that she wanted to run for a long-time Republican seat in Texas called Harris County Judge. Swati and Matt wrote the first check into Lina’s campaign account and continued to support her throughout her first bid.

Against what many considered to be impossible odds, Lina won the election in 2018. Ever since, she has led Harris County through trial and triumphs with astounding strength. In the words of fellow Texan, Beto O’Rourke:

[Lina] is doing an incredible job as judge, as evidenced by her efforts to quickly respond to COVID-19—Harris County announced a mask mandate in April 2020, but a statewide policy didn’t follow until July—as well as to expand her constituents’ access to the ballot box. Early-voting sites offered by the county nearly tripled last year.

It’s hard to imagine a tougher set of circumstances to confront in your first term in office, but she has really distinguished herself and makes us proud—not just as Democrats but as Texans. That’s what leadership looks like...

Erin Burns is the New Executive Director of Carbon180

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Erin Burns as the new Carbon180  Executive Director! Erin joined the organization in 2018 as the Director of Policy, helping lobby to win the carbon tax pricing during a gridlocked Congress and a Presidential administration that did not believe in climate science.

If you are looking for places to put dollars to work in climate, consider Carbon180 -- especially as Vox just named them one of the most effective climate policy organizations in the country:

Carbon180 focuses on ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere, a neglected yet important piece of the climate puzzle. It has successfully lobbied for a tax credit for carbon capture and helped win increased funding for carbon removal research. And the organization is well connected among policy elites: It often briefs congressional staffers and provides input on legislation.
